How do you apply to the Urban Teacher Education Program?
STEP 1: APPLY TO RUTGERS-NEWARK OR NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology)
Anyone wishing to enroll in the Urban Teacher Education Program must first be a matriculated student in the Rutgers-Newark College of Arts and Sciences, Rutgers-Newark University College, or New Jersey Institute of Technology.

STEP 2: Before submitting a formal application to the Urban Teacher Education Program, you need to fulfill the following ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
- Grades of B or better in the following courses:
- 2 English Composition Courses (R-N: 101/102 or 103/104; NJIT: HUM 101/102 and/or HUM 211/212)
- College Algebra, College Algebra Int., or Math for the Liberal Arts (Grade of “C” or better in Pre-calculus is acceptable)
- 2 Laboratory Science Courses
- Social Foundations of Urban Education (21:300:292)
- Declare a major that will prepare you to teach a subject that is represented in the curriculum of New Jersey’s K-12 schools and that our program recommends for certification. (See our Areas of Certification)
These requirements are usually met within the 1st two years of university study.

STEP 3: While in Social Foundations of Urban Education(21:300:292), you can apply to the program and register for the next two foundation courses (295 & 298). You will receive an application response by email.

Note: Incomplete Application Packets will not be considered! If you are a transfer, post-baccalaureate, or MAT student you will need to order transcripts from your previous institutions. No transcripts should be sent to the Program Coordinator directly; they must be included in your application packet.
